Opera Theater
61,500square feet
Capacity: 2,000 seats, 3M investment.
Built in 1936, Teatro Opera is an historic landmark with a strong image in the community.
The development of the project implied a complete refurbishment of the interior, and a restoration of the art deco façade and the main lobby.
The program required important modifications and upgrade of the stage and the under-stage in the structural, mechanical and electrical systems. Two new concrete gates supporting a metallic grid were built to hold the intrigued mechanization system. This delivered a unique flexibility to host Broadway productions.
Two new Pullman concrete desks were built to maximize the capacity of the theater and to improve the visibility of the scene from every seat.
The new work also included new dressing rooms to accommodate large castings and a complete upgrade of the restrooms.
The exterior plaster and cast stone facade were repaired and restored to its original design.

Re-using the four-story concrete structure of an old chemical laboratory, the client’s program is organized around a floor-to-ceiling high central oval-shaped hall intersected by pedestrian bridges and connected vertically by an open staircase that create circulation between the various areas. This hall acted as visual connection between levels and mid-levels.
Among the specific requirements were five live radio transmission rooms, production and post production facilities, tape vaults and media management center, manager offices, staff offices, and meeting rooms.
